Mac OS X Server 1.0 is an operating system developed by Apple Computer, Inc. Released on March 16, 1999, it was the first version of Mac OS X Server. It was Apple's first commercial product to be derived from "Rhapsody"—an eventual replacement for the classic Mac OS derived from NeXTSTEP's architecture (acquired in 1997 as part of Apple's purchase of NeXT) and BSD-like Mach kernel. It could run applications written using the "Yellow Box" API, and featured components such as NetBoot, the QuickTime Streaming Server, components carried over from NeXTSTEP, and the "Blue Box" environment (which allows a Mac OS 8.5 session to be launched as a separate process to run legacy Mac OS software). Mac OS X Server 1.0 was a prelude to the first consumer-oriented version of the OS—Mac OS X 10.0—which was released in 2001. It did not include the eventual Aqua user interface (instead using NeXTSTEP's Workspace Manager shell mixed with aspects of Mac OS 8's "Platinum" user interface) or Carbon API.

In today's video I'll be looking at one of the strangest Macs ever made: the Xserve. I'll be examining this old machine not as a dedicated server, but as a workstation, because it shares most of its specs with the 4,1 Mac Pro from this era with a much lower cost. Should you buy one? Special thanks to Blitzwolf for sponsoring today's video! The machine struggled to find its niche in the server market, where Macs were generally not used very often. If you’re confused about the graphics in this machine, here’s some clarification: my unit has a GT120 from a Mac Pro (PCIe card) whereas if your Xserve was ordered with a GT120 it would be in MXM form, leaving the two PCIE slots unpopulated. This means you could theoretically run 3 graphics cards in this machine! I’m considering trying to get a more modern and more powerful MXM graphics card running on this machine, such as a GTX 980M, but there are no fans to cool an MXM graphics slot so it might be tricky. There are a lot of options in this regard because MXM graphics can be found on iMacs up to 2011, and support exists for putting non-stock cards in iMacs and Xserves. Nvidia web drivers for mac could allow you to run a 980M in the Xserve provided you could cool it properly... What's better than recycling or selling your old Apple Mac for scraps? Including Apple computers. But rather than throw away your iMac, Mac Pro, Mac mini, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or MacBook adding to the world's growing e-waste, you can repurpose it as a home NAS server (and more!) by recycling and using macOS Server. From update and iCloud Drive file caching, to network Time Machine backups (a la Time Capsule), to network file sharing over SMB, AFP, and iOS' Files.app, there's a lot of opportunity! Not to mention you could install Plex Media Server or a network music app like Roon on top of that! The world is your oyster with an old networked Mac and this video will help you get started.

If your business runs on Apple products, the latest version of macOS Server might be for you. Here's a rundown of what macOS Server 2018 does. Watch more Tech Stories, a running series of short documentaries from the award-winning reporters at TechRepublic: 🤍
Well Apple made a big announcement this week for it’s Server Product. It is changing direction to move the current product towards Mobile Device Management and storage management and away from traditional server services. This means Apple is deprecating most of the server product including: -Calendar -Contacts -Mail -Messages -VPN -Websites -Wiki -DHCP -DNS -NetInstall They did provide potential replacements for each service in their support article which means that more and more of our server builds seem to be moving towards SaaS or software as a service types of solutions instead of one nicely bundled software package. In this screencast I walk through those changes with some thoughts on timing and some things you can do now to protect yourself from having your server go obsolete before you want it to in spring of this year. I also talk about the fact that I will be doing screencasts on the options you have going forward to help you make the transition. It is a sad day for those of us who have loved the server interface and all that it had to offer but it is also an opportunity to learn new things and new ways of running server services on our Macs. As always I will be here to help as best I can and will continue bringing your screencasts to help you learn to do more things with your Mac including server replacements, more on smart home set ups, and Apple software and hardware tutorials and reviews. Thanks for all your support! I love exploring new software for Macs and this presents another great opportunity to grow!

Whats up guys! Welcome back to the channel. Todays video is how I put my 2012 mac mini to use as a personal home server. Since building my hackintosh I no longer was utilizing my mac mini for anything other than collecting dust. Instead I decided why not build a home server for file storage and archiving! I'll show you everything you need to know on how to turn an older mac, like my 2012 mac mini, into a home server with this guide to build a home server on a mac. All of the features are native to macs so there is no need to buy or download any software to your mac when creating your home server either on a 2012 mac mini or another mac device! - Product Links: 2012 Mac Mini i5/4gb memory ►► 🤍 2TB HDD ►►🤍 HDD Cable Kit ►► 🤍 Firewire Gigabit Connector ►► 🤍 - My Socials: Twitter ►► 🤍 Instagram ►► 🤍 - #2012MacMini #MacMiniServer #HomeserverBuild Thanks again for watching!

In this video I demonstrate every step I take to set up a Mac mini as my home server for file sharing, backup, iTunes duties and printing. I'm not going to call this video a tutorial, but if you were to follow these steps, you'd end up with a lovely little setup for home use with a lot of power and potential. I'd like to say another big thanks to Kyle for donating this wonderful Mac mini 2009 server edition and also a big thanks to Gregg Black for donating my original Mac mini which has been serving me well for years. This Mac mini happens to be a server edition but these steps apply to ANY Mac. Of course, Mac minis make a lot of sense as servers because they're small, quiet, power efficient and don't have a built in display. My favorite macOS intro of all time, perhaps the best version of macOS of all time. You can now view it in an incredible 1080p format. Snow Leopard was stable, fast, and it felt like a complete version of Leopard. Really brings a lot of nostalgia. This was edited in Final Cut Pro 7, exported in Apple ProRes 422, and converted to H.264 in QuickTime X. Of course, this was all made in Snow Leopard.
