The grammatical gender of nouns. There are 3 genders in the Russian language. Masculine, feminine, neuter (neutral) genders. And there is good news! You don't have to remember it for each word. You can determine the gender if you know simple rules. First, look at the ending of the noun. MASCULINE NOUNS end with consonants for example: cтул, стол, каранда́ш, калькуля́тор компью́тер, ма́ркер, папа, дедушка FEMININE NOUNS end with vowels -a, -я or -чь, -шь, -жь. (Семья́, рези́нка, ма́ма, ба́бушка, ночь(night), рожь( rye), NEAUTRAL NOUNS end with vowels -е, -ё, -о or -мя (Окно́, и́мя, мы́ло(soap), же́ле(jelly) Sometimes when the word ends with -ь you have to look it up in the dictionary to determine the gender because it can be both masculine or feminine for example карусель (merry-go-round) - feminine; пень (stump)- masculine; but if it ends -чь, шь, жь it is always feminine.
